NCRevit
Tips and Tricks

May 2, 2012
Kristen Fierro with Advance Solutions showed us Revit 2013.  Some of the highlights we discussed were major improvements to the stair and railing tool.  The new component based stairs offers more flexibility when modeling and documenting your stair design.  With the new railing enhancements, you can create a more accurate representation of your railing design.  There are some visual enhancements with Revit 2013 as well.  Ray Trace is a photorealistic rendering mode.  Keep in mind, it is resource intensive!  Also there is now photorealistic entourage available.  There is a new surface transparency graphic display option for visual style (similar to ghosted surfaces in Revit 2012).  We briefly touched on dimensions.  You can split a linear dimension chain.  You can add a diameter dimension.  You can define the equality using a formula.  Lastly, you can now search for views in the project browser.
At this point, we basically ran out of time.
Kristen did a great job with a limited amount of time, and a lot of material to discuss.

Autodesk has just released new videos to youtube showing some of the new features of Revit 2013.
These are just some...

We talked about the recently release Revit Subscription Advantage Packs.  What they are, how they work, how to get them!
Of particular interest was the Conceptual Energy Analysis which can facilitate decision making early in the design process.  Also, the Revit Server Extension was of intrigue.  This web based service is designed to aid in collaboration of projects with geographically dispersed teams.  Thanks to Pat with TPM for leading our discussion.

We looked at the newly released Revit Architecture 2011.
We went over some of the new tools.

But youtube had some awesome stuff too.  Just search Revit 2011

We talked about the system requirements for 2011.

Someone has created a great website.
http://sites.google.com/site/revitblogdirectory/

Our discussion was led by Eric Stewart.  He showed us the website above, as well as many of the extensions offered in the various Revit products.

On Advanced Solutions, Inc's website (Thanks for hosting our meeting Doug and Kristen), we found several FREE download tools.   http://www.advancedsolutionsonline.com/bimassist/index.aspx

We also talked about tools provided by Autodesk thru the subscription center (FREE if you are on Subscription).
We talked about Revit Extensions for Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010
The Subscription Advantage Pack for RAC (from Autodesk):
        This package includes:

  • Wood Framing Wall
  • Content Generator
  • Freeze Drawing Update
  • Grid Generator Update

The Subscription Advantage Pack for RST (from Autodesk):
        This package includes:

  • Wood framing—More quickly and precisely model a wood frame structure within interior and exterior walls. Models can be automatically generated based on user-defined parameters.
  • Bridge—More accurately and efficiently model 3D bridges and generate typical 2D drawings of plans and sections.
  • Rebar collision detection—More easily check for interference of reinforcement earlier in the design process to help reduce costly on-site redesign and rework.
  • Freeze Drawing Update

The Subscription Advantage Pack for RME:  (from Autodesk):
        This package includes

  • Freeze drawing Update]

There is a space naming utility for Revit RME
There was a content extension released for Revit RME in December

There is the worksharing monitor, which is good for all three software products.

  • Who is currently working on this project?
  • Is my local copy of the project up-to-date?
  • When will my Save to Central operation finish?
  • Has my request to borrow elements been granted?
  • Are any issues interfering with my work on a Revit software project?

There are a few Blogs and websites that talk about Autodesk extensions.

Also, don't forget to checkout Autodesk Labs
This stuff is usually there for a limited time, and often makes its way into the products, or becomes its own product.  But they are FREE while they are on Autodesk Labs.

We had a great presentation from Jason Dodds, Autodesk, on Ecotect Analysis software.  You can find a Solar Radiation Technology Preview for Revit Architecture and Revit MEP at http://labs.autodesk.com/.

Remember, if you sign up for Autodesk University, don't forget to mention NCRUG as your organization.  Also, if there is a second choice for organizations, put Advanced Solutions.  Sign up for Augi members begins early August. All others is mid August.  Augi is free, so sign up!  http://augi.com/home/default.asp
Revit classes fill up fast, so register early.

Tool tip of the night:

In Revit 2010, if you hit the ALT key, it will give you the keyboard shortcut keys.    It’s a toggle, so you click ALT again, and they will disappear.

So, for example, hit once, and you’ll see the keyboard shortcuts for the pull downs, and if you then click H for the Home Ribbon, you will see the keyboard shortcuts for the Home Ribbon.

Where’s my tool:

I know where it was in 2009, where is it in 2010?
